Lady Starlight was a performer Gaga encountered during this time. Vince Herbert signed Gaga to Streamline Records in 2007, an imprint of Interscope Records. Gaga signed a music publishing contract with Sony/ATV following her time as an apprentice to a songwriter at Famous Music Publishing. Gaga was hired to create music for Britney, Fergie, New Kids on the Block, and the Pussycat dolls. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio; Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live, making her his "franchise player. In 2008 Gaga released her debut album , 'The Fame', to little radio attention. Gaga was on tour throughout Europe and also in gay clubs across the US to promote the album - however it was not until her first hit "Just Dance" came into the attention of the public in 2009 that Gaga was a star on the scene. Gaga was suffering from a labral injury to her right hip. She had been taking care of it in secret for several weeks in order that she could go on tour. She was unable to walk following a performance in Toronto and was in extreme discomfort. The tour was canceled.
